December

We (Me Caroline my partner, and Millicent my 5 year old- well 6 by December!) daughter, are going to England to see Caroline's Mum who we have not seen for a few years. I am hoping to hook up a gig or 2 over there, but I don’t have a lot of contacts, so things will be on hold here in NZ for a bit.

Jan 2010

Emma Pask Quintet Nelson Jazz fest

  Highlights

6 Jan Carolina Moon group Nelson Jazz Fest.

Caroline is a great singer. Check her web site www.carolinamoonjazzgroup.com - She covers a lot of world/medieval and Euro jazz styles. A real open singer very serious about her calling. This as a great band to play with - the material is great and we have a lot of fun!

5 Mar Music of Duke Ellington with Auckland Philharmonic

6 Mar Wellington jazz festival The Roger Manins Trio - Roger Manins Sax, Mostyn Cole Bass, Rueben Bradly Drums

We hosted the Jam session for the Wellington Jazz festival. A bloody self centered Blues singer called Otis something hogged the first 40 minuets ( he never got off the E chord for 40 min either!!), But the session was saved when the Boys from the Mingus Dynesty band all came and played for the rest of the night and Otis finally got his fat ass off the stage, hopefully to never return anywhere. He would make a good bus driver.

7 Mar Wellington jazz festival Roger Manins Bernie McGann Australisian project with Roger Manins Tenor, Bernin McGann (Aust)Alto, Carl Dewhurst (Aust) Guitar, Paul Dyne Bass, Reuben Bradley Drums.

Bernie is my hero really. His music speaks to me so strongly. He is the real deal. A true Jazz great. What a privilege to play with him. Carl Dewhurst is astounding on guitar. He can do anything, but more than that he plays MUSIC. He listens, swings. I love Carl.

9 Mar Auckland University Monday Night Jazz Series performance and live recording with the Roger Manins Bernie McGann Australisian project.

As above But supported by Ron Samsom Drums and Oliver Holland Bass.

5 April Mike Nock Quintet Mt Eden Domain Auckland
featuring Mike Nock, Roger Manins, Kim Patterson, Tom Dennison, Frank Gibson and Neil Watson. This really was a fun gig. Mike has taught me so much over the years. I have been fortunate to be included in 4tets, 5tets and the BSB Band over the years with Mike, and done many a tour. When you are with Mike, there are no boundaries. You improvise, listen, react and nothing else matters.

10 April Florian Ross Trio (Germany) with Roger Manins (Sitting in!!) house concert (our place).

We have been having house concerts at our place for nearly 2 years now. We have had Tony Goreman, Michel Benebig, Florian. Ross, Jon Gordon, Sarah Lieb. We have a BBQ- bring your own piss and food, bring a donation for the band, and a pillow to sit on. These gigs we put on if someone is passing through and needs or wants somewhere to perform and share what they have in an informal warm setting.

18 April Christchurch Jazz festival with Emma Pask Group (Aust)
with Kevin Hunt (Australia), Roger Manins tenor sax, Ron Samsom drums, Kevin Haines bass. Emma is my favourite Jazz singer. She swings like no one I know, and Kevin Hunt has to be seen to be believed- so much Music!

20 April Auckland University Monday Night Jazz Series The Roger Manins Trio concert and live recording (Roger Manins Sax, Mostyn Cole Bass, Rueben Bradly Drums). Featuring Rogers original music. I love this band

15-18 May New Caledonia tour with the Michele Bene

big Soul Jazz Quintet featuring Larry Ranson (USA) on Drums, and Me. Hammond organ Soul Jazz With Shem on vocals! What fun we had. I Love to play the blues!!

25 May Auckland University Monday Night Jazz Series recording and concert - Steve Hains Trio from Canada (Ron Samsom, Steve Haines, Roger Manins).

Steve: a great great bass player and person. Steve was resident guest artist at Auckland University (where I teach) for a week. This recording was orchestrated by Ron and has been in the pipes for a long time. It was fantastic to play in this trio. A real joy. Steve was great, and Ron is just so musical- such a wonderful drummer who grooves , is creative, and has great drum sounds/ Cymbals colours/ ideas!

June 20 House concert featuring Sarah Lieb (USA). Once again we fitted a 5tet into our living room!
